• Women Helping Women: Why You Might Want a Female Surgeon

Once upon a time, medicine was a male-only field, cosmetic and plastic surgeons included. However, times have changed and there are more and more qualified female surgeons, like Dr. Rochlin, in the field of plastic and cosmetic surgery. Many women seeking a surgeon are turning to women over their male colleagues.

Look at the Stats

Though cosmetic surgery is, by no means, for women only, women still made up over 90% of all the surgical cosmetic procedures in the United States in 2014, according to the ASAPS. (American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 2014). As the overwhelming majority of cosmetic and plastic surgery clients, it’s understandable why women might gravitate towards female plastic surgeons.

The Estrogen Connection

One of the main reasons for seeking a female surgeon is that you may not feel comfortable discussing such an intimate choice (or an intimate area) with a man, other than maybe your significant other. Many women choose female gynecologists for precisely this reason and it’s not a far leap.

Another reason is that women might feel unable to speak up and disagree when consulting with a male surgeon, and this can prove disastrous when it comes to your health and your overall satisfaction with your treatment. You might feel more at home making your voice heard if another woman was sitting across the desk.

Sometimes it’s not a matter of intimidation or feeling uncomfortable, but one of frustration. It can be difficult to express the exact reasons you feel unhappy with your appearance to someone who doesn’t have the same equipment, even your partner. Knowing that your surgeon can relate to issues like under-wires, chafing, and skinny jeans from an insider’s perspective can be a huge relief when you are trying to pinpoint what you want to change and why.

The Takeaway

In short, there are many reasons that a woman might look for a female plastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon for their procedure, whether it’s the ability to joke about certain annoyances to the understanding of complicated issues. None of these preferences take away from the experience or skill of male surgeons in the field.  However, what we’ve mentioned are understandable and completely valid reasons for choosing a surgeon like Doctor Rochlin, who views cosmetic surgery with a woman’s eye, and a woman’s touch.
