The Comfort Zone is Real

Getting out of your comfort zone is a great way to find new passions and learn new things. However, a surgical consultation is not the place to take that step.

Going to the doctor shouldn’t be an uncomfortable experience in any context, unless you are going to have said discomfort treated! It’s important not to use your search for a cosmetic or plastic surgeon as an opportunity to push the boundaries of your comfort zone; stick to the qualities that make you comfortable.

For many women, this means having a female plastic surgeon rather than a male. While male surgeons have the same experience and qualifications, and may have the same personality traits as well, many women feel more comfortable discussing their bodies, their choices, their insecurities, and their concerns with another woman than they do with a man.

During a consultation, you are there to talk about the things you want to change about your body. This super-stressful, very intimate discussion can be difficult, and feeling that your surgeon understands and values your input can be a powerful motivator to lay all the cards on the table. You’re at your most vulnerable and you want someone in your corner who can truly relate to your situation.

Perception is Everything

One of the main reasons it may be more challenging choosing a male surgeon is how we perceive men in positions of power and authority. For example, you may feel you need to take the male surgeon’s suggestions without question, simply because “doctor knows best.” But the whole reason for the consultation process is to discuss how YOU want to look, and how best to achieve that goal.  It can be easy to lose sight of that if you feel like your surgeon’s recommendations should be taken as gospel. Additionally, suggestions from a male surgeon may feel like he is trying to shape your body to his own preferences, which may lead to tension and discomfort.  Cosmetic surgery is about you and what you want from your body, not what someone else thinks you should look like.

Feeling in Control

Additionally, you may hold back from mentioning your concerns to a male surgeon because you feel it isn’t your place to question his expertise. That is NOT the way the consultation process works. It is extremely important to ask any questions you feel you need to about the process, the materials, the expected results, and the recovery period during the consultation, so you can be prepared for what comes next, and feel comfortable and confident that you will get what you want out of the surgery.

The Takeaway

These feelings usually have little to do with skills, experience, or bedside manner of male surgeons, though there are always exceptions.  Some women feel this way about doctors in general, regardless of gender. But sometimes it’s just easier to open up and be honest about your concerns and desires with a female cosmetic surgeon, like Dr. Rochlin. And that’s okay, because opening up and being honest are exactly what you need to do to get what you want.
