• “Busting” the Myths About Breast Augmentation

Pun intended, of course. However, if you have ever considered breast augmentation, you’ve probably subjected yourself to all kinds of information gleaned from the darkest corners of the internet, the disasters as well as the triumphs. While every individual experience is a bit different, there are some common myths we can dispel right away, and perhaps make it a bit easier to come to the right decision for you.

Myth #1: All Breast Augmentation Looks Fake

Breast implants can indeed look ‘fake’. In fact, some women want it that way. However, there is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to implants. Your cosmetic surgeon is the best person to determine what will look best on you, and it is easy to achieve a natural looking result if that is what you desire. If the implant is placed under the muscle, and you don’t choose a “too large” size for your frame, chances are most people won’t even notice.

Myth #2: Breast Surgery Recovery is Painful

Pain thresholds can vary greatly from one person to another. It is surgery, after all. Some women report their post-op pain was easier to manage than a wisdom tooth extraction. Most will be able to return to work and normal function within a few days.

Moderate pain killers are prescribed to help with the pain, but if there are no complications you likely won’t need them at all after the first two or three days.

Myth #3: Your Implants Will Look Awesome Right Away

You’ve got a foreign object that has just been placed inside your body. Skin, muscle and other tissue must settle, stretch and knit together, and this takes a commitment to a very specific regime of after care, which includes daily massage. Your implants will initially look quite high, and will be swollen. As the inflammation goes down and the implants begin to settle, they will look great – but give yourself some time. Don’t plan your surgery the week before a big event.

Myth #4: My Implants Will Last a Lifetime

While there are no hard and fast rules about when implants should be replaced, many will at some point need replacement or adjustment. There are several reasons you might need further surgery or consider breast implant replacement or revision, and these include ruptures, wrinkling or rippling, asymmetry, capsular contracture or hardening. However, if your implants look great and you are happy with them, there is really no need to go down that road. In some cases, women have been able to maintain their implants for up to twenty years.

Myth #5: Breast Implants are Only for Women Who Want Very Large Breasts

While most women choose to have implants specifically to address size issues, that doesn’t always mean a drastic change. Many choose to have more subtle augmentations, such as going from a B to a C cup in order to look better in their clothes, to feel more confident or to address shape or symmetry issues in their natural breasts. For women who have undergone a mastectomy, breast augmentation can help them to feel ‘normal’ again, and that doesn’t always necessitate abnormally large breasts. Your perfect shape is all about what makes you feel great – and that often has little to do with size.
